5 Reasons to choose Schantz to repair Atlanta roof hail damage

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

If your roof in the Atlanta region was damaged by recent hail, here’s 5 reasons to call Schantz Home Improvement.

  1. Whether you need roofing repairs to return to the original condition, or a completely new roof of newer quality, we’ll help you make the decision based on budget, value, insurance recovery and other factors so you can make an informed decision.
  2. A written agreement with clear list of all materials and workmanship is standard. Most contractors give you a one page proposal and since homeowners are usually not roofing experts, they don’t realize what’s omitted or substandard until the project is underway.
  3. Master Elite Roofing Certification. It’s not just a piece of paper. Because of their unique training and factory-certified status, roofs installed by Master Elite™ Contractors are eligible for special warranties — all backed by GAF’s financial clout as North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. After all, a warranty is only as good as the manufacturer that stands behind it. With a GAF roof, you know that you will be covered throughout the warranty period —without fail!
  4. If appropriate, we’ll offer an option to purchase a 50 year warranty for  your roof at a substantial discount- 80% off for installs completed by May 31, 2011.  That’s right, while some contractors charge higher prices after a storm, we’re offering a special deal. Why? We’re not a fly by night operation swooping in and we want your referrals for future business.
  5. A clean work site. We wouldn’t want to live in the middle of an unsafe construction site and know you don’t want to either.  We keep things tidy as your project progresses and when we’re done, our inspection team will make sure your yard is cleaned properly of any debris.
  6. BONUS: We do more than just roofs! Our contracting services include windows, doors, siding, and much more.

About Schantz Home Improvement:  Schantz Home Improvement Company of Atlanta, Ga. provides contracting services for a variety of exterior home projects. Schantz is not a professional sales organization like many contracting companies. We send an experienced estimator to your home that possesses extensive construction knowledge. We feel it is imperative to understand the complete construction of your home in order to evaluate the proper solution for your home improvement project. Merely understanding a window or piece of siding is not sufficient. We will offer you the solution that provides the best VALUE for your situation.

GAF Announces Groundbreaking Lifetime Limited Warranty On All Of Its Laminated Roofing Shingles

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Homeowners To Benefit From Multiple Decades Increase In Warranted Performance*

WAYNE, NJ (1/2011) – GAF, North America’s largest roofing and ventilation manufacturer, is announcing groundbreaking changes to its laminated shingle warranties. Effective January 1, 2011, every GAF laminated shingle, including all Timberline® shingles—the #1-selling shingles in North America—will be covered by a lifetime ltd. warranty when installed on single family residences (see ltd. warranty for complete coverage and restrictions). GAF will no longer offer any laminated shingles with just a 30-year or 40-year warranty, a first for any roofing manufacturer.

This revolutionary change has been made possible by GAF’s Advanced Protection™ technology, which was first introduced in 2007. This innovative shingle technology has resulted in shingles that offer improved performance, including superior durability and wind resistance. GAF is so confident in the performance of its Advanced Protection™ shingles that it has decided to make this unprecedented improvement in its warranties.

“As a company, we are committed to advanced quality, industry-leading expertise, and solutions that make our customers’ lives simple — which is what this warranty upgrade is all about,” stated Bob Tafaro, President and CEO of GAF. “Contractors will benefit from knowing that they can stand with confidence behind every installation of GAF laminated shingles. Homeowners will benefit from knowing that their installed shingles are warranted for a lifetime, adding significant value to their home.”

GAF has also upgraded the coverage of its Golden Pledge® and System Plus limited warranties, which are offered exclusively by its GAF-certified contractors.

“We are especially excited to announce this warranty upgrade, given that 2011 is GAF’s 125th anniversary as a company. At a time when Americans are facing so much uncertainty about the future, you can be sure that GAF will be there decades from now to stand by the performance of our roofing products. This warranty upgrade will reinforce both our leadership position in the industry and our promise of excellence to our customers,” said Tafaro.

FAQs About GAF’s Warranty Upgrade
What changes are being made to GAF’s laminated shingle warranties?

* Effective Immediately…
all GAF laminated shingles installed after January 1, 2011 are automatically covered by a Lifetime ltd. warranty!

* The word “lifetime” means…
as long as the original individual owner of a single family detached residence (or the second owner, if coverage was properly transferred during the Smart Choice® Protection Period), owns the property where the shingles are installed. See ltd. warranty for complete coverage and restrictions.

What if the product wrapper indicates that the warranty term is 30 years or 40 years?

* Existing inventory…
All laminated shingles are now upgraded to a lifetime ltd. warranty – even if the language on the package refers to a 30 or 40 year warranty.

* Need proof?…
For consumers who want proof that existing inventories are now covered by a lifetime ltd. warranty, a special certificate is available at www.gaf.com/upgrade. (Note: Use of the certificate is not required to obtain the upgraded coverage.)

Which geographies are affected? All of the United States and Canada
How is GAF able to make such a major warranty upgrade?

This upgrade is possible due to the exceptional performance of GAF’s Advanced Protection™ shingles, which we first introduced in 2007. This has resulted in…

* Improved shingle quality…
by redistributing asphalt to the critical weathering layer (where it’s most needed!), re-formulating the self-seal adhesive, and enhancing the fiberglass mat.

* Improved wind performance…
all shingles now pass ASTM D3161 Class F 110 mph and D7158 Class H 150 mph, the highest ratings available (testing performed by Underwriters Laboratories, a respected, independent organization).

* Improved environmental impact…
due to lower unnecessary material usage.

Will product names be changing?
During 2011, the following product name changes will be made:
Current Name Future Name
Timberline® Prestique® 30 Timberline® HD™
Timberline® Prestique® 40 Being discontinued
Timberline® Prestique® Lifetime Timberline® Ultra HD™
Camelot® 30 Camelot® II
Timberline® Majestic™ 30
(available in limited areas only) Timberline® Majestic™
(available in limited areas only)
Note: Other than the five products listed above, no other product names will be changing!
When will updated product wrappers and shrouds begin to appear in the marketplace with the Future Names and warranties? Updated wrappers and shrouds will be phased in during Q2/Q3, 2011.
What names do I use in the meantime to place orders? You can place orders for product using the Current or Future Names. For the time being, our invoices and statements will reflect the Current Names. At some point in 2011, our invoices and statements will begin to use the Future Names. We will advise you when that will occur.
Have the products themselves changed? No, other than our normal ongoing process of continuous improvement, the products are essentially the same. Therefore, they do NOT require a Do-Not-Mix. GAF is upgrading its warranties based on its Advanced Protection™ shingle design that was phased in beginning in 2007.
Do I get a Lifetime ltd. warranty on products carrying 30 and 40 year warranties that were installed in 2010? No. While there is essentially no physical difference in product installed in 2011 vs. 2010, we wanted to select a single upgrade date and chose a time of the year when installations are relatively low to make this change.
Why should I continue to install products labeled as having a 30 or 40 year warranty term? Because these products now carry a lifetime limited warranty, subject to the terms of our lifetime ltd. warranty for all laminated shingles.
What is happening to three-tab (strip) shingles? Three-tab shingle warranties remain unchanged.
If all laminates carry a lifetime warranty, why buy Designer Lifetime shingles? Because of their exceptional appearance! Besides being especially durable, Designer Lifetime shingles are beautiful, stylish, and their extra thickness gives them added dimensionality. For instance, Timberline® Ultra HD™ (currently known as Timberline® Prestique® Lifetime) has been designed for added dimensionality (it’s up to 50% thicker than Timberline® HD™)

GAF Introduces EverGuard® Extreme™ Thermal Protection TPO The next generation of TPO membrane

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

The next generation of TPO membrane. WAYNE, NJ (01/2011) Installation of rooftop solar panels continues to be more common as an increasing number of property owners look to save on energy costs and improve their buildings’ sustainability profiles. Solar panels, however, are dark objects which can reach temperatures as high as 200 degrees Fahrenheit, leading to the risk that the roofing membrane could fail prematurely.

GAF, the largest roofing manufacturer in North America, has addressed this issue by developing EverGuard® Extreme™ TPO Single-Ply Roofing. The first TPO membrane designed with the use of building-integrated solar in mind, this new grade of EverGuard®TPO membrane is designed with higher reflectivity and heat resistance and can withstand conditions that far exceed even the most rigorous proposed ASTM standards.

Current ASTM testing is conducted at 240 degrees Fahrenheit and requires the roofing product to survive 28 days without changes in physical properties. GAF designed EverGuard® Extreme™ TPO to meet far more rigorous testing criteria. In fact, EverGuard® Extreme™ TPO can survive over 180 days at 280° F before failure occurs – that’s six times the required performance at a temperature 40 degrees higher than the current standard requirements.

EverGuard® Extreme™ is designed to withstand the high temperatures that result from the use of flexible PV modules attached directly to its surface. It has survived accelerated weathering tests designed to simulate approximately 45 years of exposure to South Florida sun. Its long life means that rigid solar arrays (that don’t result in high temperatures) can be installed with confidence that the membrane life will go beyond the array warranty.

“We are extremely proud of this product,” states Andrew Romano, Senior Product Manager at GAF. “The characteristics our technologists have designed into this product takes TPO performance to new levels.”

In conventional roofing applications, the properties of EverGuard® Extreme™ TPO will reduce the risk of failures caused by spot heating due to solar convergence. This phenomenon occurs when highly reflective surfaces such as white parapet walls focus sunlight on the field of the roof.

EverGuard® Extreme™ TPO is currently available in white in both 60 and 80 mil thicknesses as smooth and fleeceback membranes.

Atlanta roofing contractor $1500 tax credit with Timberline shingles

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Get potential energy savings, tax credits, and a limited lifetime warranty when you hire Schantz Home Improvement,  a GAF Master Elite Residential Roofing Contractor in Atlanta, Georgia to install new GAF-Elk Timberline Cool Series Shingles. Up to $1500 in Energy Tax Credits for your replacement roof are set to expire December 31, 2010 unless Congress acts to extend them.

Timberline® Cool Series Energy Saving Shingles

Thanks to modern reflective technology, you can join the green revolution with Cool Series roofing shingles. Our highly reflective shingles can help to reduce temperatures in your attic, so your home will stay cooler in the summer—to save on air conditioning costs.

Simply put, our Cool Series shingles use specially-designed roofing granules that have greater reflectance than traditional shingles. The result is, it minimizes the transfer of heat to the space below—to keep you cooler in the summer.

Not only that, Timberline® Cool Series shingles are made with the patented StainGuard® algae protection to assure the beauty of your roof against unsightly blue-green algae!

How Cool?*

Bears In House

Thanks to the reflective nature of the Cool Series Shingles, part of the heat coming from the sun gets reflected, reducing the heat in the attic, and heat going into the house. It may translate into substantial savings in air conditioning bills.

Cool roofs may save residents an avg. 7-15%** of total cooling costs, depending on geography, structure and climate. In warmer climates, cooling-cost savings may be greater year round.

A cool roof minimizes the solar heat gain of a building by first reflecting incoming sun rays and then by quickly re-emitting the remaining absorbed portion. As a result, the cool roof stays cooler than a traditional roof of similar construction.

*Results may vary by geography, season and property.
**According to Cool Roof Rating Council

Granule

A Cool Secret.

Roofing granules give a shingle its unique look and tone.
But traditionally, only white shingles have been considered “cool” by energy-saving standards.

Not any more. Thanks to our technology, cool granules are covered with multiple layers of reflective material. That means thousands of mini-reflectors working to make you feel cool!

Trust The Star…

Timberline® Cool Series is an Energy Star® qualified roof product. Here’s what it means to you:

  • Saves Money and Energy.

    According to the EPA, about $40 billion is spent annually in the US to air condition buildings — one-sixth of all electricity generated in a year! ENERGY STAR® qualified roof products may reduce the amount of air conditioning needed in buildings, and may reduce energy bills.

  • Downsizes Cooling Equipment.

    A reflective roof can reduce peak cooling demand. As a result, the home or building owner may be able to purchase a smaller, more efficient, and less expensive cooling system.

  • Decreases Pollution in Urban Areas.

    Reduced energy demand means less burning of fossil fuels, which results in less pollution from power plants. Also, ENERGY STAR® qualified roof products help to reduce the “heat island effect,” in which dark, heat-absorbing buildings and paved areas make the air in urban areas hotter, and more smoggy.

  • May Increase Roof Product Life.

    ENERGY STAR® qualified roof products maintain a more constant temperature, reduce thermal shock, and may help to extend the life of the roof.

For Homeowners

  • Tax Credit…

    Get up to $1,500 (30% of material cost) back from the government in the form of tax credit on colors that are Energy Star® qualified*

GAF Materials voted best shingles by Builders Mag 2010

GAF Materials Corporation Secures Highest Quality Rating in Builder Magazine’s 2010 Brand Use Study

WAYNE, NJ (07/2010) – GAF Materials Corporation, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, has secured the top Quality Rated Brand for asphalt/fiberglass shingles in Builder Magazine’s 2010 Brand Use Study. Sponsored by Hanley Wood, the survey questioned 10,800 builders, builder-developers and general contractors about their familiarity with, use of, and opinions about brands in 81 product categories. Paul Bromfield, Senior Vice President, Marketing states, “GAF-Elk is pleased to be recognized for our high level of quality by the very people who install our product. As a leader in roofing since 1886, we have a long history of focusing on innovation driving us towards continuous improvement efforts – including our Advanced Protection technology. By enhancing the materials we use, we have created stronger, more durable shingles that weigh less and waste fewer natural resources.” GAF-Elk brands garnered the top three spots for quality in the asphalt/fiberglass shingles category, demonstrating the strength and breadth of GAF-Elk shingle lines, each of which is constructed with the Advanced Protection technology. This continuously evolving technology has led to the design of shingles that have improved performance, including superior wind resistance, while being more environmentally friendly due to lower unnecessary material usage. There are many aspects of the approach, most of which are proprietary:

  • Using a state-of-the-art fiberglass mat technology with automated processes that eliminate unnecessary filler weight while optimizing the protective asphalt to deliver performance. This results in a lower weight shingle with advanced protection against cracking, tearing, and severe winds.
  • Using the lowest profile glass mat in North America as well as proprietary processes, binders, and fiber strand orientation for optimal composite performance. Its reduced weight allows a greater percent of asphalt in the top or weathering layer, greater flexibility for bending with fewer cross-sectional mat cracking stresses, and contains higher fiber density making it stronger.
  • The shingles better withstand thermal cracking during severe temperature swings (150°F to 0°F) before the shingle cracks. In one sample, GAF-Elk shingles performed 33% better in thermal cracking than a competitor’s heavier shingle, again proving that performance is not correlated to weight.

With the improved wind performance that Advanced Protection technology has helped deliver, every shingle GAF-Elk now manufactures passes ASTM’s two toughest wind tests: ASTM D3161 Class F 110 mph and ASTM D7158 Class H 150 mph. These Advanced Protection product enhancements were made possible due to GAF-Elk’s world class R&D, which utilized sophisticated computer modeling to map each shingle into 10,000 pieces to predict how the new optimized shingle would perform. This same type of modeling, also known as 3 dimensional finite element analyses, is used by PhDs to design lighter aircraft that last longer. “We are committed to both the creation of superior roofing products and our corporate sustainability initiatives,” continued Bromfield. “This Advanced Protection technology has furthered our progress in both areas.”

About GAF Materials Corporation GAF Materials Corporation is the largest roofing and ventilation manufacturer in North America, with sales of nearly $3 billion annually. Frequently Asked Questions About Warranties

Why Are Warranties Important?

A new roof is a big investment, typically involving thousands of your hard-earned dollars and lasting 25, 30, 40 years or more. As with any big investment, knowing in advance what your warranty covers could save you thousands in the event that problems arise with your roof.
What Are The Chances Of Having A Problem With My New GAF-Elk Roof?

Based on our state-of-the-art manufacturing process, the odds of having a problem with a new GAF-Elk roof are miniscule. On the other hand, while serious problems with GAF-Elk roofing materials are rare, if you were to have a problem, it can be as expensive to fix as your roof originally cost. So while the risk of having a problem is low, the cost if you do have a serious problem can be high.
What About Problems With Installation?

GAF-Elk’s studies indicate that more than two-thirds of the problems that people experience with their new roofs are due to the contractor’s workmanship—not the roofing materials. This is an important distinction to keep in mind when deciding on warranty coverage.
What Should I Look For In A Roofing Warranty?

Basically, there are two types of coverage that you should ask your contractor about: coverage against material defects and coverage against workmanship errors.

Tell Me About Coverage Against Material Defects…

To the best of our knowledge, all roofing products come with a warranty against material defects, although your exact coverage will vary depending on the brand. For example, a typical shingle warranty will cover material defects for a period of 20, 30, 40 years or more. The warranty on the other components of your roofing system can vary from as little as a few months to several years. It is important to remember that coverage against material defects is provided by the manufacturer, so you should select a brand from a manufacturer who is financially strong and therefore more likely to be in business for as long as you own your roof—which could be several decades!
What Is GAF-Elk’s “Smart Choice® Protection Period”?

GAF-Elk’s warranties come with a special provision called the Smart Choice® Protection Period that covers you against material defects during the critical early years of your new roof. During this period, in the event that you experience a material defect on covered components, GAF-Elk will provide you with 100% replacement materials and the reasonable cost of labor to install them. This is important because some roofing warranties may only provide replacement materials, but not the labor to install them.

What Is The GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System Plus Ltd. Warranty?

The GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System Plus Ltd. Warranty provides coverage against material defects for all major GAF-Elk components on your roof (not just your shingles)—so you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that, if any covered roofing component fails, it will be covered by the warranty (see ltd. warranty for complete coverage and restrictions). The warranty is available through GAF-Elk certified contractors, and is a low-cost way to get up to 50 years of non-prorated coverage (against material defects) on your new roofing system.

How Do I Get Coverage Against Workmanship Errors?

Many roofing contractors provide their own warranty against errors in workmanship, sometimes for as long as ten years or more. Obviously, that coverage is only good for as long as the contractor remains in business. Since roofing is a “high turnover” occupation, the majority of roofing contractors are out of business within five years—far less than the life of your new roof—making the warranty worthless and leaving you with nowhere to turn in the event that you have a workmanship problem.
Are There Any Manufacturers Who Will Cover The Contractor’s Workmanship?

Until relatively recently, there were no manufacturers that provided warranty coverage against errors in the contractors’ workmanship. Recognizing this obvious need, GAF-Elk introduced the Golden Pledge® Ltd. Warranty—the first manufacturer’s warranty to cover both material defects and the contractor’s workmanship (see ltd. warranty for complete coverage and restrictions). Whether or not your contractor remains in business, GAF-Elk will stand behind his workmanship for 20 years! The Golden Pledge® Ltd. Warranty is available only through GAF-Elk Master Elite™ Contractors, who are factory-certified by GAF-Elk. The warranty even includes an inspection by GAF-Elk’s independent inspectors after your new roof has been completed to insure proper installation. It is the strongest, safest warranty available in roofing today. Your Master Elite Contractor can provide a price for the warranty when he gives you a quote for your new roof.
How Do I File A Claim If I Have A Material Defect On My GAF-Elk Shingles?

Before you proceed, if possible you should locate a copy of your GAF-Elk warranty and a copy of the contractor’s invoice, contract, or original estimate. You will also need to provide the date applied, proof that you were the owner when the shingles were installed (or that the warranty was properly transferred to you),and the number of squares applied(1 square = 100 square feet). Then call our Warranty Service Department toll-free at 1-800-458-1860, and let us know the nature of your complaint.
