Cold weather roof installations

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Is it acceptable to install a roof in cold weather? The quick answer is yes.  However, the roof shingles need warm weather to seal.  There is a “tar line” on all shingles that when heated will seal to the shingle below it.  This means the roof essentially becomes a solid sealed surface.  The only issue that may arise if  the shingles do not seal due to cold weather is “shingle blow off.”  High winds could potentially blow shingles off the roof.  However, proper nailing will make this highly unlikely.  One exception is that low slope roof materials generally require the temperature to be a minimum of 50 degrees.  Theses materials are not nailed and need to seal in order to protect the roof and home from water infiltration.

GAF Stays Ahead of the New ‘Green’ Codes

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Sustainability codes and guidelines have made an impact on the construction industry. In roofing, the influence of LEED, Title24, Miami 21, Global Cool Cities Alliance, and other programs and initiatives is undeniable. Major property owners, including the U.S. Navy, have mandated white roofs for their properties; and many more property owners are asking about sustainability. GAF, North America’s Largest Roofing Manufacturer, has been proactive with products and services that help roofing professionals and property owners meet these standards while providing the building performance that they need. With the adoption of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) expected to begin as early as 2012 in some jurisdictions, GAF offers a wide range of products that meet or exceed the code’s requirements – such as innovative products like EverGuard® Extreme® TPO – confirming the company’s leadership role in the roofing market.

EverGuard® Extreme® TPO is the first product designed for applications of solar on rooftops, with exceptional durability and the reflectivity needed for these installations. This durability makes it an ideal product for any roof, especially where property owners are looking to meet sustainability guidelines, earn LEED credits, or prepare for a future solar installation. EverGuard® Extreme® is only the latest of GAF’s products that supports these new sustainability codes; Energy Cap™ BUR and SBS sheets were the first asphaltic membrane products to meet the requirements of Title 24 and other white roof standards, and will also meet IgCC requirements. Among the many other GAF products that meet the requirements of the new code are Timberline® Cool Series™ shingles, TOPCOAT® roof coatings, and GardenScapes™ vegetative roofing.

Additionally, GAF offers programs and services that make it easier for contractors to comply with these codes. GAF has addressed making recycling more accessible in a number of ways, including a multi-year sponsorship of the Construction Materials Recycling Association’s  (CMRA) Find-A-Recycler section of shinglerecycling.org, as well as the creation of the Certified Green Contractor program, which rewards contractors for their recycling contributions.

According to Bob Tafaro, President and CEO, “Sustainability means different things to different people. At GAF we take a pragmatic approach, which means offering the right solutions for our customers as well as focusing on using resources wisely, efficiency in operations, and end-of-life outcomes for our products.”

GAF’s operations have led the way in sustainability. GAF was the first major shingle manufacturer to have recycling at each of its shingle plants, and now has two zero-waste-to-landfill manufacturing facilities, with a goal of adding many more. “Our manufacturing process is very resource-efficient,” stated Martin Grohman, Director of Sustainability at GAF. “In addition to shingles, our plants recycle metal, cardboard, and oils, as well as everyday items like batteries, paper, inks and toners, and CFLs.”

While these new codes will continue to mean changes for the construction industry, GAF will continue to lead the way with products, services, and operations that meet the toughest requirements of both the most stringent codes and the most demanding property owners.

GAF’s “Ugliest Roof in America” Contest Winners to be Featured on Lifetime’s Designing Spaces

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, recently partnered with the Lifetime Network’s Designing Spaces to offer a free roofing system to the winner of its “Ugliest Roof in America” contest. The roofing system is valued at up to $15,000 and the winner will be featured on a segment of Designing Spaces. Entrants were asked to submit photos showing the condition of their roof as well as a story about the hardships that their roof is causing in their lives

.gaf ugliest roof contest

After reviewing an avalanche of submissions that came in through the company website, the GAF decision panel selected Eileen and Jorge Tello and their daughter Emmalie of Port Chester, NY as the winners of the new roofing system. The Tello family’s old roof was literally falling off of the house; shingles were missing, granules were gone, and every time it rained, water would stream into their home. With Eileen’s heart condition and expensive medications, it caused a considerable financial burden when she lost her job and health insurance. Jorge is self-employed and a portion of the family’s income comes from tenants who live on the second floor of their home. If the roof continued leaking into the tenants’ apartment, the Tellos would lose a valuable source of income.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision to select a winner, but in the end we at GAF agreed that the Tellos were a very deserving family with a very ugly and dysfunctional roof,” stated Paul Bromfield, senior vice president of marketing at GAF. “Everyone on our decision panel felt good about being able to make a life-changing contribution to a family in need.”

GAF spared no expense, installing Camelot®, its most popular Lifetime Designer Shingle. Other system components contributed towards the home included Deck-Armor™ roof deck protection, Weather Watch® leak barrier, Pro-Start™ starter strip shingles, Cobra® ridge vent, and Timbertex® premium ridge cap shingles. The installation occurred in late August and was taped for a Designing Spaces segment that will air on Friday, October 21 and Friday, October 28 at 7:30am.

Designing Spaces is a half-hour informative series that guides viewers on how to make their homes more beautiful and functional.

Atlanta hail damage attracts problem roofing contractors from out of area

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Hail damage from storms last week are certain to bring another round of roofing contractors from out of the area to Atlanta.   Unfortunately, the majority of these contractors provide a huge disservice.  Their primary motivation is profit. Therefore, they will install the least expensive roof system that they can using substandard labor and materials.  The reality is they go from storm to storm, state to state.   They will not be around if a warranty issue arises and there will be no where for a homeowner to go.  They offer to absorb the homeowners’ deductable and offer upgrades to the shingle.  They do not address the important areas of the roof system under the shingle such as metal flashings, leak barriers, and ventilation.

Homeowners should go to http://corp.sos.state.ga.us/corp/soskb/CSearch.asp to determine when the company came into existence.  Also, check out local review websites and the BBB to check their reliability.  The savings upfront will be quite costly down the road.
